External Review's Review of DEMO HOTEL DURBAN

1 Would you recommend us to others?

All in all we enjoyed the holiday but once been is enough. There are far better places nearer home.

2 How would you rate your overall stay and our facilities and amenities?

TRIPADVISOR - Xchefie - 23 Jun 2019 - - - Great hotel but won't be returning - - - 1st. Time in Mauritius and we had a lovely stay. The hotel setting was picture perfect. The beach was well kept and at pied e tierra. No beaches on Mauritius are private so people wonder willy nilly on the beach including feral dogs at times upto four or five amongst the beds looking for food. There is security on guard stationed on the beach ( not entirely sure what for) but they never shoo dogs away. A negative is that it is the windiest side of the island and an anti cyclone blew most of the time during our stay. Some days stronger than others. We hired a taxi from outside the hotel which the drivers arrange between themselves on a rota basis who you get. It cost us 3000 rupee for a full day which we thought it was good value. I would also like to recommend Papa Dreams, an water activities company based in Trou eau douce. Do not book with guys holding its brochures on the beach. Ring them directly and they pick you up. We had a fantastic day doing the five Islands snorkeling, lobster bbq on the beach etc. We met a couple who rented a car and they offered for us to join them exploring the South of the island. My advice is don't rent a car in Mauritius it's a nigtmare. There is no sat nav. The road signs are almost non existent and the few there are simply stop. The roads are narrow and zig zag so It take for ever to navigate around this island. My advise would be rent a taxi with a driver. On Mauritius packs of feral dogs roam every where which if you like walking and are not confident around dogs could cause great stress. (http://bit.ly/2RxePua)

3 How did our team look after you during your stay with us?

The staff were very pleasant and on the whole very accomodating and soon became familiar in a good way. We got Robin. He was supurb and very helpful and I would highly recommend him.

4 How would you rate our food and beverages?

The down side of the hotel was the food. Now I realise it's a 3 star hotel and you get 3 star food. We wrongly came to Mauritius expecting prawns, crab, seafood etc. Forget it.! The chef is obviously given a meagre budget which he has to keep to. He produces food which is ok and will fill you up so that you won't ever go hungry, but do not expect anything that will blow your sences. More like food we get in Chinese buffet restaurant. The grilled fish offered on a couple of days were small filets over cooked served on mash potato and macedoine of frozen vegetables. I asked about the lobster they offered at 1200 rupee and was told it was frozen and not fresh. Shame. The drinks at the bar have considerably less alcoholic than branded products so it's hard to get drunk. No straws or stirers for the cocktails. Clearly Mauritius lacks fresh fish and seafood. We went to Port Louise and as always abroad I headed for the fish market. Words fail me at this point. Suffice to say my wife and I rushed out heaving as we reached the exit. Never have we experienced such a disgusting offensive nauseating space. There was all of 2 or 3 stalls with nothing more than a few cuts of large fish which looked awful and nothing else. No prawns, lobsters, mussels, clams no nothing. There was a couple of stalls with chickens, giblets scattered. We run through this God forsaken place. Oh! It was Wednesday and not Monday.
