Whether you are going on holiday or a business trip, missing your flight can be a frustrating and costly experience. Our research in dealing with airlines, travellers and guests, suggested these few helpful tips on how to avoid missing a flight, therefore saving time, money, and aggravation for all concerned. Here are our top 5 tips:

Tip 1.   CHECK IN ONLINE

This will save you from spending time in long queues at the airport and gives you peace of mind that you’re checked in. Don’t forget that once you’ve checked in online, the airline considers you to be on the plane and will account for you if you are running late for your flight. If you are travelling light and do not need to check in any luggage (weight or size restrictions) and have already had your boarding pass/ticket, either printed or on your electronic device, such as your phone, all you need to do is proceed straight to the boarding gate with your printed out boarding pass/ticket. Online check-in is available if you are within the baggage restrictions. If you need to check in any luggage you can proceed straight to the bag drop counter (bag drop usually closes 40-60 minutes before departure). Always familiarize yourself with the online check-in guide, policies and procedures for all airlines.

Tip 2.   AN UNEXPECTED EMERGENCY - PHONE THE AIRLINE OR AIRPORT and let them know.

An airline will not delay a flight for a passenger (unless in case of an extreme emergency). However, an airline representative can advise you of any information that could potentially help you in finding a solution or alternatives. Also, by informing the airline that you may potentially miss your flight, they may be able to give your seat to a standby passenger and hold you in good light for doing so.

Tip 3.   IF YOU ARRIVE AT THE AIRPORT LATE, IMMEDIATELY FIND AN AIRLINE REPRESENTATIVE and let them know you are late for your flight.

In most cases, a helpful airline representative can direct you to the front of the queues for security checks and passport control so that you can get to the boarding gate as soon as possible. Don’t forget to thank them for their assistance and kindness.

Tip 4.   PACK LIGHT TO AVOID HAVING TO CHECK IN YOUR BAGGAGE

As mentioned before, if you’re doing a short trip, pack as light as possible to store all of your belongings as hand luggage that does not need to be checked in. You will immediately save time, which will come in handy if you’re already late. Ensure you are aware of the terms and condition of the airline's hand luggage restrictions.

Tip 5.   PLAN TO GET TO THE AIRPORT EARLIER THAN NEED BE

This tip may seem obvious, but many people enjoy sticking to a strict travel schedule, which may include detailed and exact travel times to and from the airport. By doing this, you may forget to take any roadworks or traffic jams into consideration and arrive at the airport later than expected. So, rather give yourself extra time at the airport, prior to check-in or departure. Most airports have restaurants or shopping facilities to keep you busy if you have to wait. You are also more relaxed – the perfect start to your vacation or business trip.
